During a classroom video snack visit last week, I was able to participate in a super fun trivia game with the kids. When Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Erving were done, some of the kids tried to stump us with their own trivia questions. One of the questions sparked a fun memory for me. The question was:
"What color is a giraffe's tongue?" I actually knew this answer because I had hand fed giraffes on a couple of occasions when I lived in Texas. I tried to find a picture of myself feeding a giraffe, but unfortunately they were taken before digital cameras were a thing. I know - in Ancient Times! Hee, Hee! But I did find a picture that shows the answer! Their tongues are black!!! They are 16 - 20 inches long and scientists believe the dark coloring helps to keep them from getting sunburned while they are eating leaves from the tops of trees under the African savanna sun.

On this day, April 30, 1789, George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the United States. He has retired as a general in the army back to his home in Mont Vernon, VA. But was called upon by many of the public and those in political offices to come forth and serve as our first head of state. He reluctantly did so, and was sworn in to office in New York City (our original capital) around 2pm on this day. Celebration of this day had started with a military salute at Fort George at sunrise and continued until a firework show that night. President Washington's day ended by having to walk home because his carriage could not get through the crowds of people that had come to celebrate him! Explore a timeline of George Washington's Inauguration at www.mountvernon.org Did you know that today, April 23, is considered to be William Shakespeare's birthday? They didn't keep very good records back then, but experts agree that the evidence points to today being the day back in 1564. But the coincidence is that on April 23, 1616 (the same date, many years later), Shakespeare died. Wow! Can you figure out how old William Shakespeare was when he died?
