On this day, April 30, 1789, George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the United States. He has retired as a general in the army back to his home in Mont Vernon, VA. But was called upon by many of the public and those in political offices to come forth and serve as our first head of state. He reluctantly did so, and was sworn in to office in New York City (our original capital) around 2pm on this day. Celebration of this day had started with a military salute at Fort George at sunrise and continued until a firework show that night. President Washington's day ended by having to walk home because his carriage could not get through the crowds of people that had come to celebrate him! Did you know that today, April 23, is considered to be William Shakespeare's birthday? They didn't keep very good records back then, but experts agree that the evidence points to today being the day back in 1564. But the coincidence is that on April 23, 1616 (the same date, many years later), Shakespeare died. Wow! Can you figure out how old William Shakespeare was when he died?
