On this day, April 30, 1789, George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the United States. He has retired as a general in the army back to his home in Mont Vernon, VA. But was called upon by many of the public and those in political offices to come forth and serve as our first head of state. He reluctantly did so, and was sworn in to office in New York City (our original capital) around 2pm on this day. Celebration of this day had started with a military salute at Fort George at sunrise and continued until a firework show that night. President Washington's day ended by having to walk home because his carriage could not get through the crowds of people that had come to celebrate him! Why?My Dad always told me "You learn something new every day!" And I try to take this to heart. I love exploring my world and learning new things. The best part of teaching is sharing them with others! So here is my place to share some of the things I learn. I hope you learn something new today from here - or elsewhere! ArchivesCategories |
