1917: Jeanette Rankin attended her first session of Congress, becoming the first woman representative. Carrie Chapman Catt and other suffragists accompanied Rankin, who represented Montana, to the Capitol for her first legislative session. Women in Montana had won the right to vote in state elections in 1916, four years before national suffrage for women was achieved in 1920.
